What cookies are and why we use them

Cookies are small text files that a site places on your computer, tablet or phone when you visit. They allow the site to recognise your device as you move between pages and when you come back later, and they hold small pieces of information such as whether you are signed in or which language you have selected.

Where we say cookies on this page, we also mean similar technologies that do much the same job: pixels, tags, browser local storage and the software kits built into our mobile apps.

We use cookies for four broad reasons: to keep your account and payments secure, to remember the settings you have chosen, to understand how the site is used so that we can fix faults, and to measure our own advertising. Some cookies are needed for the site to function at all. The rest are optional, and you decide whether we may set them.

Age and identity checks

Our site is for adults aged 18 or over. We hold a gaming licence and are required to confirm the age and identity of everyone who plays. Some strictly necessary cookies support those checks and the security of your account with us, so they cannot be switched off while you are signed in.

The types of cookies we use

We group the cookies on our site into the four categories below. The cookie notice on the site lists what is in use when you visit, and you can accept or decline each optional category there.

Strictly necessary cookies

These make the site work and keep it safe. They are set whenever you use the site and do not need your consent, because without them we could not provide the service you have asked for. Their main purposes are set out below.

  • They keep you signed in as you move from page to page.
  • They carry a deposit or withdrawal request through the cashier without losing it part-way.
  • They spread traffic across our servers so that pages continue to load at busy times.
  • They help us spot fraud, shared logins and duplicate accounts.
  • They apply the safer gambling tools on your account, such as deposit limits and time-outs.
  • They remember the cookie choices you have already made, so you are not asked again on every page.

Performance and analytics cookies

These tell us how the site is being used, in reports that count devices and visits rather than naming individual players. We use them to find pages that are slow or broken and to decide what to improve. Their main purposes are set out below.

  • They count visits and record which pages and game categories are opened.
  • They measure how long pages take to load and log the error messages that appear.
  • They show where people stop part-way through registration or a cashier step.
  • They compare two versions of a page to see which one is easier to use.

Functionality cookies

These remember the preferences you set, so the site behaves the way you left it. If you decline them, the site still works, but you may have to make the same selections again on each visit. Their main purposes are set out below.

  • They remember your language and display settings.
  • They keep your preferred payment method in view in the cashier, within the options shown in your account.
  • They save which lists or panels you have collapsed on the games pages.
  • They note that you have already seen and closed an on-site message.

Marketing cookies

These help us measure and manage our own advertising and the messages we send you. Some are set by the advertising and measurement partners we work with, and those partners may be able to recognise your device on other sites. You can decline this category at any time. Their main purposes are set out below.

  • They record that a visit followed one of our adverts or e-mails.
  • They limit how often you are shown the same advert.
  • They measure which promotional pages lead to a completed registration.
  • They stop our advertising from reaching people who have self-excluded, taken a break or asked us to end marketing.

How to manage cookies on our site and in your browser

In the cookie notice on our site

When you first visit, a notice asks for your choice on the optional categories. You can accept them all, decline them all, or select category by category. You can change your mind whenever you like through the cookie settings control in the footer of every page. Your decision is stored in a cookie on your device, so if you clear your cookies or use a different browser or device, we will ask you again.

In your browser or device settings

Your browser gives you separate controls that apply to every site you visit. Depending on the browser, you can usually do the following.

  • You can delete the cookies that are already stored on your device.
  • You can block all cookies, or only those set by other sites.
  • You can set cookies to be deleted each time you close the browser.
  • You can browse in a private or incognito window, which clears cookies when you close it.
  • You can send a general privacy or tracking preference signal, where your browser supports one.

These settings are normally found under Settings, then Privacy and security. On a phone or tablet, your device settings also let you reset or limit the advertising identifier used by apps. Because the steps differ between browsers and versions, please use the help section built into the one you are using.

What happens if you block or delete cookies

Declining the optional categories is straightforward and the site will continue to work. Blocking cookies altogether is different, because parts of the site depend on them. If you block everything, the following can happen.

  • You may not be able to sign in, or you may be signed out as soon as you open another page.
  • A cashier session may fail part-way through and have to be started again.
  • Your language and display preferences may be forgotten on every visit.
  • The cookie notice may appear on each visit, because your earlier choice cannot be stored.
  • We see less about faults on the site, so problems that affect you take longer to find.

Strictly necessary cookies cannot be switched off

If your browser blocks strictly necessary cookies, you will not be able to sign in, deposit, withdraw or play. The safer gambling tools on your account continue to apply in all cases, whatever your cookie settings.

Changes to this policy and how to reach us

We may update this policy when the technologies on our site change or when the law requires it. The current version is always the one shown on this page, and the date it last changed is given at the top. Where a change affects the optional categories, we will ask for your choice again through the cookie notice.

If you have a question about this policy, want help with your settings, or would like to know more about how we handle personal data, write to us at support@casino-tote.co.uk or use the live chat on the site. Our team will look into your query and reply to the e-mail address registered on your account.

Your account also holds the safer gambling controls we offer, including deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion; these are set in your account rather than through cookies. Free, confidential help is available in the UK from GambleAware, GamCare and the National Gambling Helpline, and GamStop can block you from licensed gambling sites in Great Britain at your request.
